


Comparing and Contrasting Three Universities in Australia
There are many kinds of universities in Australia. The universities also have differences among others, for example the advantages and the disadvantages in studying there. For those who wants to study abroad to Australia, knowing the informations about the universities first is the right way to choose which university with good facilities, situations and services that they can enter. The University Of Technology Sydney (UTS), Macquarie University (MU), and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) were researched and compared with regard to location, transport, faculties, Library /IT Facilities, and student support for International students.
With regard to the location and the public transport, UTS is the most convenient, with the main campus located in the heart of Sydney, a short bus ride, and 10 minutes walk from Central Railway Station if we use train. UNSW is located in Sydney, with the main campus on Kensington, only seven kilometres from Sydney's central business district, so it is close to the city. The public transport that we can use to get there is by bus with only 20 minutes ride from Central Railway. MU is the least convenient. Located in North Ryde, Sydney, with 30 minutes drive, or 45 minutes by bus.
The 3 universities also offer different courses. UTS is a large university with a wide range of courses offered. The university corporates several buildings in a number of location, City campus and Kuring-Gai campus. Here is the courses that City campus offered : Business, Design-Architecture & Building, Education, Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, IT, Law, Nursing-Midwifery & Health, Science, International Studies. On the other hand, Kuring-Gai campus offered Business, Education, Nursing-Midwifery & Health. MU is as large as the UTS and also has a wide range of courses offered. With 3 campuses , MU campus, The International College Of Management, and Macquarie City College, they offered 9 faculties, Business, Computing-Engineering and Technology, Education, Humanities, Law, Medical-Health and Chiropraptic Science, Psychology and Linguistics, Science, Society-Culture-Media and Philosophy. UNSW has a narrower range of courses than the 2 others have. UNSW offered Arts & Social Sciences, Built Environment, Business, College of Fine Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Engineering.
The 3 universities also have library / IT facilities. They have similar access hours on Monday- Thursday, from 8.00 am- 10.00 pm. But they have different access hours on Friday , Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday. Both UTS and UNSW closed at 6 pm. In contrast, MU closed at 5 pm. UTS Library has more than 650.000 books, journals and audiovisual items, with 370 computer terminals, laptop facilities and a wireless network. MU has a more complete one, with more than 1.000.000 items and will open a new library in 2010 which will feature Australia’s first automated document storage and retrieval system. Materials stored in the system will be retrieved by robots with the push of the button. UNSW is the most complete library with 2,7 million items of books, newspaper, maps, audiovisual, electronic items, and 23000 electronic journal titles.
All the universities also have support services available for International students.The aim is to make every students stay in Australia a pleasant one. The support services can help with accommodation, health cover, fees, social activities, study skill workshop and personal welfare. MU has a good one in supporting the International students. They have career advisor, workshops and online resources, study skill advisor, and all the International students have access to advice from an International Student Service (ISS) counsellor. UTS has a similar services with MU. They have legal advice, special needs sevice, student orientation, students association, student publication, UTS online and careers service. On the other hand, UNSW only have a career advisers and teachers to support the International students.
In conclusion, all the universities have each benefits on their facilities and services. UTS might be the best choice among others, as it is the most convenient location , the widest range of courses offered, and it has good services in supporting the International students.
